"The artist...knowing that he can never create anything on his own account, out of the top layers of his personal consciousness, he submits obediently to the workings of inspiration; and knowing that the medium in which we works has its own self nature, which must not be ignored or overridden, he makes himself its patient servant and, in this way, achieves freedom of expression." -Aldous Huxley

Paul Smith, Typewriter Artist (03:37) | At-large reporter Ray Summers wrote and narrated this profile, shot and edited by Mark Gardner, who also selected the music. Summers learned about Smith from a newspaper feature in a Roseburg, Oregon newspaper. Summers and Gardner then roamed Southern Oregon for a week and, one wintry morn, dropped by the Roseburg nursing home where Smith resided. The two men were in and out in 90 minutes, but what they captured was amazing.

Gardner submitted the piece to the National Press Photographer Association's 2nd quarter clip contest in 1976. It won 1st place nationally as the best television news story. Until recently, the 3/4" Beta tape containing it was lost in Gardner's attic, but he bought a used 3/4" deck from eBay and digitized it. (originally aired March-April, 1976 on KOIN-TV, Portland Oregon)
