"The artist...knowing that he can never create anything on his own account, out of the top layers of his personal consciousness, he submits obediently to the workings of inspiration; and knowing that the medium in which we works has its own self nature, which must not be ignored or overridden, he makes himself its patient servant and, in this way, achieves freedom of expression." -Aldous Huxley

Budapest

My pen moves along the page like the snout of a strange animal,
shaped like a human arm and dressed in the sleeve of a loose green sweater.
I watch it sniffing the paper ceaselessly, intent as any forager that has nothing on its mind but the grubs and insects that will allow it to live another day.
It wants only to be here tomorrow, dressed, perhaps, in a sleeve of a plaid shirt,
nose pressed against the page, writing a few more dutiful lines while I gaze out the window and imagine Budapest, or some other city where I have never been.

...it blindness. It remains awake, insistent on renewal, virility, and the grace of memory's balm. 'Foreign' is the designation of the curious, the 'not us'. The rupture between Self and society. Home is where the memory of the Self dwells. Whether those memories spawn or shrivel determines who we are and determines what we may become. As the program's events prove, the scope is wide and the reach is deep. We live on earth, after all, which is every foreigner's home.
